A week or so in the fridge.
- It's low-GI, although I don't yet know if it's diabetic-friendly
- It comes in different colours: black, white and red; I have red
- It's as versatile as rice or couscous
- It's one of those trendy 'superfoods' which means it's a lot easier to get a hold of now than it was 2 years ago.

To cook it, it's basically the same as rice. Add 2 parts liquid to 1 part quinoa, set to gentle heat, cook for about half an hour, you're done. Easy as. Oh, except the important part: soak or rinse thoroughly (or, hell, both) before cooking. There's a coating that doesn't taste very nice that you want to get rid of. So the internet tells me, at any rate.

Anyway, so far I've done two things with it.

First thing was to make up a fairly plain 'savoury' style. 1 cup quinoa, 2 cups vege stock, a bay leaf, a shake of random spices (cumin, tumeric, chilli, pepper). I had some of this as a lunch, by itself. Man, was it filling. Tasty; the quinoa itself is very mildly flavoured, unlike, say, amaranth (ew). It is also a very textured food - chewy and interesting in the mouth, much more so than rice or couscous. About the closest would be perfectly al dente pasta, but made as it is of smaller pieces, it's not the same at all (which is not a bad thing). I'd say maybe 1/4 cup would have been enough for lunch food, easily.

Based on this experiment, flavoured appropriately, I think it would do well with just about anything that has a liquid component - thai and indian curries, italian sauces (especially tomato-based), stews, casseroles, tinned tuna, that sort of thing.

The second experiment I've conducted is using the cooked leftover quinoa to make a griddle cake, as a substrate for my bacon and eggs, instead of bread. I must say, the results are ... well, not so great. I should probably have looked up some sort of fritter or pancake recipe first, instead of just mixing with egg and spices and whacking it into the pan any old how and hoping. Don't get me wrong, here; it tastes great, the flavours mix well, but it's not holding together very well. Scooping it up with a fork wasn't what I had in mind. On the bright side, this is the perfect excuse to experiment more, and get it right. Hmm ... I wonder what it would taste like mixed in with scrambled eggs?

Other experiments on the horizon: using quinoa to give a bit more texture to meatballs and pies. Making a porridge or congee equivalent, both sweet and savoury. Some form of salad. I'm curious to see how it would work in biscuits, bread, and muffins.

Money, damn money

Sigh.

I'm starting to resent the thought of going back to work. But right now, going through the job-search process is just soulcrushing.

On top of that, is that I've just gotten into the swing of things with uni. I feel comfortable with my studies, keeping up with classes, doing assignments, etc. well, I would, if I didn't spend so much time being depressed about finding work. As I write this entry, I have a half-hour overdue assignment I should be writing. Oh, and I should be brushing up on my (very rusty, unused since last year) programming skills, so I don't totally screw up my interview on Thursday. The day before I move house. Two days before the next assignment is due. Oh, and an online exam I haven't even looked at the course material for.

It's a bit difficult to be cheerful just now. I'm trying. It was good to see many people I haven't had a chance to see since RailsCamp5. Also, meeting new people was very good - the lightning networking sessions were especially good for that.

Ideas:
Upstarta - non-traditional startups, which operate on a $0 budget, no VC, and have a very different approach to becoming a going concern. Starting up a group to share more ideas, methods, and perhaps incubate a few along these lines. Drop me a line if you're interested in attending.
RailsRumble - in a team, looking forward to the competition! Wonder if I can get rockstar to sponsor my team?
Lightning networking - perhaps doing this as a BoF at OSDC, or as a lunch/morning tea/short break feature activity. Will have to see if that flies with the organisers.

Many thanks to the organisers for putting together such an awesome event. I'll be sure to attend the next one.

Of food and delicious things ...

As anyone knows who knows me well, I love food. I love pretty much all sorts of food (except sushi). I love cooking, but I don't seem to have as much time/energy for it of late - well, not for the last six months.

And I'm not all *that* fond of packet food.

Are there any good resources for from-scratch, relatively brisk (eg, an hour or less from start to on the table) recipes, that use fresh ingredients?

While I'm on the topic, I've been thinking of starting up some sort of herb garden, but I have no idea where to start. I'm sure I want to grow coriander (for seeds and for leaves); galangal; ginger; garlic; lemongrass; basil; chillies; thyme; rosemary; lavender; peppermint; and kaffir lime (for leaves).

This list is mostly assembled from the list of fresh herbs I frequently buy (or wish I could). My only real option is in pots, in a courtyard that gets sun for perhaps 1/3 of the day. Can any green thumbs out there suggest what arrangement/s would work well, and which of the named herbs are likely to be a complete failure? Links to general care such as pruning, feeding, watering frequency etc would also be appreciated - gardening is something I am highly inexperienced with.

Back again

I've been busy, lately. Checkin with Qantas was fine - although my flight was early (wtf?) so I nearly missed bagcheck.

Anyway. Got on the aeroplane, spent ages just sitting around. Obviously there was at least one other person who had planned to turn up on time instead of early. Finally took off, the flight was ... flight-like. Nothing particularly of note.

Got off aeroplane in Melbourne. Retrieved baggage, checked back in with Jetstar, and wandered the terminal looking for food (it's only 8pm or thereabouts). Finally found a vending machine, and paid ridiculous prices for a snack. My flight to Hobart was scheduled for 10pm. Which was fine.

We left at 11pm. That sucked.

Disembarked at the airport ... and no taxis. It's midnight, it's chilly, and there are no taxis. 20 minutes later, after sitting on the concrete and security staff making phonecalls, a taxi turns up. The taxi dude is kind of cool, though - he knows what linux is, and dicks around with electronics in his spare time. Awesome. Get to the uni and press the silver button and ... I've fallen off a list. After about an hour of digging through, they say 'sleep here, check back in the morning'. Kudos to those lovely reception people - it was *really* late, and they went above and beyond.

So, after leaving home at 8am brisbane time, I crawled into bed at 1.30am Hobart time. The downside to all this?

I haven't had a coffee yet.

I feel all growed-up

So, this morning at 3.30am AEST, my first major public-facing project went live. There are several examples of this in the open source world.

However.

Sometimes, they are just really annoying.

Like right now, when the senior developer is a 3hr time difference away, which makes having strategic meetings somewhat difficult - especially when they have to be rescheduled to later in the day. Were this other person in the office, we could all just go down to the pub and have this meeting, despite the office boardroom being occupied.

Oh well. Could be worse. Actually, next week, it will be. I'll be in Hobart, most of the office is in Brisbane, and our senior developer will still be in NZ.

It's mostly the time differences that make things awkward. For instance, I can spend an hour searching for the answer to a question that the guy for whom it is 8pm could have answered in 30 seconds flat.

The physical separation also ensures that there is not watercooler chat - meetings have to be organised, days or weeks in advance, to make sure that two-way communication is possible. Impromptu discussions about code or process issues simply can't happen, between the remote and local members of the team.

There are some benefits - flexibility in workplace hours and location is nice. But it does come at a cost.

Been a while ..

So it's been some time since I posted on this blog.

I have news!

I've been selected as a Google Diversity Delegate (http://linux.conf.au/media/news/66) for LCA2009, and I'm thrilled.

See all you shiny people there!

Wireless and network interface fragility

For some reason, I've noticed that trying to turn my wireless off and on occasionally hard locks my machine under feisty fawn. I run Gutsy. At work I have a 24" widescreen (Acer AL2416W) to plug into my laptop to use as a primary screen, so I have more screen real estate to work with.

It took me a couple of hours to arrive at a workable solution.

Note to self for future reference: DO NOT USE displayconfig-gtk. It doesn't know what the work monitor is, and throws errors when trying to use mirror mode.

DO use nvidia-settings. This is part of nvidia-glx-new. However, backing up the xorg.conf file first is a remarkably good idea.

At present, I don't know of a good way to set up xorg.conf profiles, I guess, depending on whether or not I'm at work. AV was spot on for the main conf - having the keynotes streamed live was awesome. Open day was also a great success.

Due to illness I missed a fair swathe of the conference - but the parts I did see, I enjoyed very much. The dinners' themes of the Cathedral (Speakers) and the Bazaar (Penguin) was also a really good idea.

Monday - miniconfs. I got to run around being generally helpful, which was awesome. Matthew Garret fixed suspend on my laptop for me - I was only introduced afterwards.
Tuesday - more miniconfs + speakers dinner. More running around, hung out with very shiny people.
Wednesday - Bruce Schnier's keynote. Melbourne Hospital. Sigh. Missed Penguin dinner :(
Thursday - Stormy Peter's keynote. Interesting talks, more cool people, OLPCs everywhere! Twisted meetup that evening, google student party, PDNS.
Friday - Anthony Baxter's keynote. Talks on google, census.
Saturday - Open Day! Played DDR. Watched pong. Saw a best-of. Talked to more excessively cool people.

All in all, a good conference. Well done guys and gals.
